FROM: Honorable Daniella Levine Cava, Commissioner, District 8
TO: Carlos A. Migoya, President and CEO Jackson Health System
DATE: February 27, 2020
On Wednesday, February 26, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced what may be the first instance of a case of the COVID-19 virus, also known as the Coronavirus, in the U.S. that has yet to be linked to overseas travel or any other known cause.
In light of this news and CDC’s statement warning of a potential “community spread” of the virus, Chairwoman Edmonson has added a discussion item to the March 3rd Board agenda regarding the County’s preparedness for COVID-19. During this discussion, I am requesting that Jackson Health System provide a briefing to the Board on the precautionary measures being taken in light of the CDC’s latest news. In addition, the CDC is urging the U.S. to start preparing for the possibility of “major disruptions” to everyday life; therefore, it’s imperative that we have full understanding of what Jackson’s capacity is to confront the Coronavirus and any budgetary impacts.
Further, this is a moment where we need our health professionals to be at the forefront of coordination and dissemination of information; therefore, any guidance on best practices for all our health services to follow will be welcomed.
I am confident that your team, under your leadership, is already preparing next steps. I look forward to your briefing and ensuring we stay one step ahead as this health matter develops.
